Explainable (formerly Signal Creators) is an AI safety communications organization based in San Francisco that supports filmmakers, journalists, and communicators working to translate AI safety research into compelling public narratives. The organization partners with AI safety organizations such as CAIS, Apollo Research, and others to amplify their research through video and media campaigns. Its flagship program is the Frame Fellowship, an 8-week fully funded residential fellowship for storytellers focused on AI risks, run in partnership with Manifund and hosted at Mox, San Francisco's largest AI safety community space.

Theory of Change
AI safety research is technically complex and underexposed to the public, policymakers, and potential future researchers. Explainable's theory of change holds that by building a network of skilled communicators — video creators, journalists, and storytellers — who can accurately and compellingly convey AI safety ideas, the organization can increase informed public awareness of AI risks, help recruit talented people into AI safety careers, and strengthen the broader AI safety ecosystem. Supporting high-quality AI safety media is a cost-effective way to multiply the impact of technical research by ensuring it reaches and influences audiences beyond the AI safety community itself.
