Org Details
Updated 05/18/26Explainable, formerly known as Signal Creators, is an AI safety media and communications organization based in San Francisco, California. Its core mission is to support creators who help the world understand artificial intelligence and its risks, with a focus on making AI safety research accessible to general audiences through high-quality video and media content. The organization operates as a connector and capacity-builder in the AI safety communications ecosystem. It partners with leading AI safety organizations to produce and distribute video campaigns that increase public exposure of their research. Known partnerships include campaigns for the Center for AI Safety (CAIS), Apollo Research, and work around AI control research papers. Explainable's flagship initiative is the Frame Fellowship, an 8-week fully funded fellowship designed for storytellers — filmmakers, journalists, and other communicators — who want to work on AI safety content. The program provides fellows with flights, housing, a stipend, meals, production resources, and mentorship from prominent AI safety communicators including Rob Miles. The fellowship is run in conjunction with Manifund and takes place at Mox, described as San Francisco's largest AI safety coworking and community space. The organization is active on Instagram under the handle @explainable__ai and has been recognized within the EA and AI safety communities as a key node in the growing ecosystem of AI safety media and outreach. Team member Zac, previously associated with the Neural Guide channel, joined Explainable to focus on AI safety content creation.
Theory of Change
Updated 05/18/26AI safety research is technically complex and underexposed to the public, policymakers, and potential future researchers. Explainable's theory of change holds that by building a network of skilled communicators — video creators, journalists, and storytellers — who can accurately and compellingly convey AI safety ideas, the organization can increase informed public awareness of AI risks, help recruit talented people into AI safety careers, and strengthen the broader AI safety ecosystem. Supporting high-quality AI safety media is a cost-effective way to multiply the impact of technical research by ensuring it reaches and influences audiences beyond the AI safety community itself.
