Updated 05/18/26Halcyon Futures is a nonprofit incubator and grant fund founded by Mike McCormick in 2022 and incorporated as a 501(c)(3) in 2023, based in Santa Monica, California. The organization's core thesis is that humanity is approaching a critical transition with transformative AI, and that the bottleneck to good outcomes is often the absence of the right people working on the right problems at the right time. Halcyon addresses this by identifying exceptional leaders and helping them launch new ambitious projects or pivot into high-impact roles. The nonprofit operates two complementary vehicles: Halcyon Futures, which provides grants and operational support to new nonprofits and early-stage initiatives, and Halcyon Ventures, a VC fund that invests in for-profit founders tackling AI security and global resilience. Services include seed funding, co-founder matchmaking, board participation, hiring and fundraising support, community retreats and salon dinners, and career advisory for professionals transitioning into the space. As of early 2025, Halcyon has incubated approximately 20 organizations and companies — including Goodfire, Andon Labs, Gray Swan, Haize Labs, Lucid Computing, and others — that have collectively raised over $350 million in follow-on funding. Over 100 people have been advised on high-impact career transitions. The organization has a small core team of three: Mike McCormick (Founder and CEO, formerly a partner at GPV managing over $1 billion in capital), Shelby Summerfield (Head of Operations, formerly COO of Humanity Forward), and Ross Matican (Investor, formerly of Bessemer Venture Partners). In fiscal year 2024 the nonprofit reported revenues of approximately $2.1 million and expenses of approximately $1.7 million, with major support from Good Ventures Foundation.
Theory of Change
Updated 05/18/26Halcyon Futures believes the most effective way to reduce existential risk from transformative AI is to ensure that exceptional, mission-aligned leaders are empowered to start new organizations and take on high-leverage roles at a critical moment in history. By providing seed funding, co-founder introductions, operational support, and community at the zero-to-one stage, Halcyon can catalytically launch organizations — in technical AI safety, governance, policy, and resilience — that would not otherwise exist. Each successfully incubated organization then pursues its own theory of change for reducing x-risk, while Halcyon's portfolio approach diversifies bets across multiple intervention types.
