Humans in Control is an early-stage US-based nonprofit movement founded by Vael Gates, an AI safety researcher with a PhD from UC Berkeley and prior work at Stanford HAI, FAR.AI, and the AI safety field-building nonprofit Arkose. The organization's mission is to protect children, families, communities, and future generations from the risks of unchecked AI by building a broad bipartisan grassroots movement. It pursues this through grassroots organizing, communications, and state legislative campaigns aimed at ensuring transparency, accountability, and meaningful safeguards for AI development.

Theory of Change
Humans in Control believes that meaningful AI safety outcomes require broad public and political support that goes beyond the existing research and EA communities. By building a nonpartisan grassroots movement, the organization seeks to generate the political will needed to pass AI safety legislation at the state and eventually federal level. The causal chain runs from public education and community organizing, to political pressure on legislators, to the passage of laws requiring transparency, accountability, and human oversight of AI systems, thereby reducing the risks of unchecked AI development.
