ML Safety Newsletter
The ML Safety Newsletter is a Substack publication covering developments in machine learning safety research, including topics such as robustness, alignment, interpretability, and systemic safety. It is a project under mlsafety.org, which is itself a project of the Center for AI Safety (CAIS). The newsletter was launched in October 2021 by Dan Hendrycks, Director of CAIS, and has accumulated over 10,000 subscribers. After a hiatus, it relaunched in February 2025 and has published issues regularly since, co-authored by Alice Blair, Julius Simonelli, and others.

Theory of Change
By curating and summarizing the latest ML safety research for a broad audience of researchers, engineers, policymakers, and funders, the newsletter helps grow awareness and understanding of AI safety as a field. Greater informed engagement with safety research increases the number of people working on and funding safety work, which in turn improves the likelihood that AI systems are developed safely. The newsletter also helps researchers stay current with developments across subfields, reducing duplication and increasing the efficiency of the safety research community.
