Technical Alignment Research Accelerator (TARA)
TARA (Technical Alignment Research Accelerator) is an initiative run by AI Safety Australia & New Zealand that offers a free, 14-week part-time program based on the ARENA curriculum. The program runs twice a year in major APAC cities including Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Singapore, Manila, and Tokyo, with in-person Saturday sessions and expert teaching assistant support. Participants work through transformer architectures, mechanistic interpretability, reinforcement learning, and model evaluation, culminating in a capstone project with potential for publication-quality research outputs.

Theory of Change
TARA addresses a talent pipeline bottleneck in AI safety: highly capable engineers and researchers in the Asia-Pacific region are unable to access flagship safety training programs because those programs require relocation or full-time commitment. By offering a rigorous, free, part-time program in participants' home cities, TARA converts strong Python programmers into technically skilled AI safety researchers. Graduates who transition into AI safety roles or produce research outputs represent a direct increase in the supply of technical safety talent globally. The APAC-region focus also diversifies the geographic concentration of AI safety work, building local communities that can sustain and grow independently over time.
