AI Risk: Why Care?
AI Risk: Why Care? is a public-facing web tool hosted at whycare.aisgf.us that uses a conversational AI chatbot to explain why advanced AI poses existential risks to humanity. Users provide their age and professional background, and the tool delivers personalized explanations grounded in an AI safety knowledge database. The project is run jointly by two nonprofits — the AI Governance and Safety Institute (AIGSI, a 501(c)(3)) and the AI Safety and Governance Fund (AISGF, a 501(c)(4)) — both led by Mikhail Samin. The organizations aim to build public and institutional awareness of AI extinction risk to support government regulation and international treaties.

Theory of Change
AISGF and AIGSI believe that preventing AI-caused extinction requires governments to impose binding restrictions on the development of superhuman AI until safety is assured. Their theory of change is that informing the general public and key decision-makers of the existential risk makes the threat salient, increases political will for regulation, and raises the cost of interference by irresponsible actors. By deploying a low-cost, personalized AI chatbot that can change minds at scale, they aim to shift public opinion and build a coalition of informed stakeholders who will demand international treaties and legislation to pause or restrict dangerous AI development.
