AI Safety Support (AISS) was a community-building organization dedicated to reducing existential and catastrophic risk from artificial intelligence by supporting people interested in working in AI safety. Founded in 2020 by Linda Linsefors and JJ Hepburn, AISS provided career guidance, mentorship matching, health coaching, a curated resource library, an AI Alignment Slack community, newsletters, and discussion events. The organization also served as a fiscal sponsor for several major AI safety programs including MATS, ARENA, and the Astra Fellowship, channeling millions in philanthropic funding to the field. AISS was placed on indefinite pause in July 2023.

Theory of Change
AI Safety Support operated on the theory that reducing existential risk from AI requires a larger and more effective workforce of AI safety researchers. By lowering barriers to entry through career guidance, mentorship, community building, and operational support such as fiscal sponsorship, AISS aimed to help more talented people transition into AI safety work and become effective contributors to alignment research. The organization also believed that supporting researcher wellbeing through health coaching and community connections would improve retention and productivity in the field.
