Updated 05/18/26Future Matters is a nonprofit strategy consultancy and think tank headquartered in Berlin, Germany, founded in 2020 by Justus Baumann, Vegard Beyer, Rosa Brandt, and Kyle Gracey. It operated under the name Future Matters Project until spring 2023. The organization's mission is to help people and organizations working on large-scale global risks become more strategically effective, focusing on three cause areas: climate protection, AI governance, and biosecurity. Future Matters offers a range of services including prioritization research to identify high-impact policy options, strategic planning and theory of change development, communications strategy and media preparation, coalition-building support, and political influence mapping. The organization maintains a scientific approach to uncovering policy opportunities it describes as potentially "1000 times more impactful than baseline proposals." Since its founding, Future Matters has completed approximately 80 client projects. Clients have spanned think tanks, advocacy organizations, government officials, companies, and movement volunteers, with geographic reach across Europe, the United States, sub-Saharan Africa, and East Asia. The organization selectively works with clients who appear genuinely committed to reducing catastrophic or existential risk, and also participates in the EA Consulting Network and EA Service Directory. As of 2024, the team comprised roughly 13 people organized into departments covering climate consulting, AI safety and biosecurity consulting, research, and fundraising and operations. Staff are based in Germany, Austria, Sweden, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, the United States, and Brussels. The organization is registered as a non-profit limited liability company (gGmbH) in Germany and holds a U.S. 501(c)(3) equivalency determination. Funders have included Effektiv Spenden, Doneer Effectief, Founders Pledge, the Grassroots Foundation, and the Giving Green Fund.
Theory of Change
Updated 05/18/26Future Matters believes that catastrophic and existential risks from climate change, AI, and biosecurity can be meaningfully reduced through better policy and political strategies. Their causal chain runs from research and consulting (identifying neglected high-impact policy options and building strategic capacity in civil society) to more effective advocacy and coalition-building by their clients, which in turn leads to stronger policies and institutional action that reduces systemic risk. By serving as a strategic multiplier for organizations already working in these spaces, they aim to improve the quality and effectiveness of the broader field.
