Updated 05/18/26Frontier AI Safety Research (FAIR), also known as FAIR IALAB or FAIR UBA IALAB, is a nonprofit research organization founded in 2024 by María Victoria Carro at the University of Buenos Aires in Argentina. It operates as an integral part of UBA IALAB, the Laboratory of Innovation and Artificial Intelligence at the university's Faculty of Law. FAIR is committed to advancing frontier AI safety through high-impact interdisciplinary research. The organization treats AI safety as fundamentally a sociotechnical challenge, believing that aligning AI systems with human values requires both technical innovation and a deep understanding of the social contexts in which AI systems operate. This perspective drives FAIR to integrate multiple disciplines including technical AI safety, cognitive science, law, and sociology. The organization pursues three core objectives: cultivating local research talent in AI safety through mentorship and career development; conducting rigorous interdisciplinary research on AI evaluations, governance, alignment, and societal risks; and fostering global community among researchers, practitioners, and policymakers across academia, industry, and government. FAIR has published research at prominent venues including NeurIPS 2024 and NeurIPS 2025, as well as the Clear 2025 conference and the CogInterp workshop. The team of approximately 12 people is led by Founder and Director María Victoria Carro, a lawyer and PhD candidate who has been a visiting researcher at University College London. Technical Leads include Mario A. Leiva and Facundo Nieto. The advisory board includes Juan G. Corvalán (Director of IALAB UBA), Vanina Martinez (IIIA-CSIC, Barcelona), and Gerardo I. Simari (Universidad Nacional del Sur and CONICET). The organization is based at Av. Figueroa Alcorta 2263, CABA, Buenos Aires, Argentina.
Theory of Change
Updated 05/18/26FAIR believes that the global AI safety field currently lacks sufficient diversity of perspectives, particularly from the Global South. By building a research hub at the University of Buenos Aires, FAIR aims to cultivate Latin American talent that can contribute to global AI safety efforts. The organization holds that treating AI safety as a purely technical problem is insufficient; integrating cognitive science, law, and sociology into safety research produces more robust and applicable solutions. By publishing research at top venues, training local researchers, and engaging international collaborators and policymakers, FAIR seeks to expand the breadth and quality of the global AI safety research ecosystem, ultimately contributing to reduced risks from misaligned or unsafe frontier AI systems.
