Research on AI & International Relations
Research on AI & International Relations was a research project housed under Convergence Analysis, an AI existential risk strategy think tank. The project examined how artificial intelligence systems are reshaping international affairs, including their effects on the balance of power between states, digital sovereignty, AI governance frameworks, and geopolitical competition. It received a $34,000 grant from the Survival and Flourishing Fund (funded by Jaan Tallinn) in the 2021 H2 round for general support. This work formed part of the broader research agenda at Convergence Analysis on AI scenarios and governance, which has since evolved into programs such as the International Security Fellowship and research on global AI governance strategies.

Theory of Change
By conducting rigorous research on how AI technologies affect international relations and geopolitical dynamics, the project aimed to inform policymakers and the AI safety community about the international dimensions of AI risk. Understanding how AI reshapes the balance of power, enables disinformation, and complicates governance can help design better international frameworks and agreements to mitigate the existential risks posed by competitive AI development between states.
