Updated 05/18/26This project conducts conceptual and strategic research on the macro-level implications of transformative AI. Forethought investigates scenarios in which AI systems soon become more capable than human researchers, driving extremely rapid technological and social change; maps the resulting challenges, such as controlling increasingly powerful AI systems, sharing the benefits of new abundance, improving collective reasoning and coordination, and determining the rights of digital minds; and sketches pathways to flourishing futures in which society successfully navigates the intelligence explosion rather than merely avoiding catastrophe.
Theory of Change
Forethought’s theory of change is to anticipate how superintelligent AI could drive extremely rapid technological and social change, build detailed models of the hardest strategic challenges in that transition, and then turn those insights into action. The team does this by researching what to do before an intelligence explosion, identifying concrete projects and policies, collaborating with researchers and think tanks, and working directly with frontier AI companies and policymakers so that their analysis shapes real-world decisions about advanced AI.
