The Scaling Era: An Oral History of AI, 2019–2025
About
Updated 05/18/26The Scaling Era: An Oral History of AI, 2019–2025 is a nonfiction book by Dwarkesh Patel, with Gavin Leech as editor, published by Stripe Press. Based largely on interviews originally conducted for the Dwarkesh Podcast, it compiles curated excerpts from conversations with leading AI researchers and company founders—including Dario Amodei, Demis Hassabis, Ilya Sutskever, Eliezer Yudkowsky, and Mark Zuckerberg—to give readers a contemporary, first-hand account of how large language models and related AI systems were developed, how they work, and how they may reshape the economy and society.
Theory of Change
By compiling and editing primary-source interviews with frontier AI researchers and company founders on topics such as scaling laws, model training, alignment risks, and the economic and geopolitical implications of superintelligent systems, The Scaling Era aims to give technically engaged readers a clear, contemporary portrait of the AI revolution. The expectation is that better-informed researchers, engineers, and decision-makers—equipped with first-hand accounts of how leading labs think about building and governing advanced AI—will make more grounded choices about AI development, deployment, and safety.
