Effective Altruism Domains
About
Effective Altruism Domains (ea.domains) is a domain name stewardship project created to protect valuable web addresses in the effective altruism, AI safety, and existential risk reduction spaces from being purchased by squatters who would block their use by high-impact projects. The project was announced on the EA Forum on January 12, 2023 by Plex, an EA community member and founder of Alignment Ecosystem Development (AED). Plex had previously posted an "Anti-squatted AI x-risk domains index" on the EA Forum, buying approximately 24 domains related to AI safety and making them freely available. That effort evolved into the broader ea.domains platform, which aggregates domains from multiple holders into a single searchable database. The platform operates on several principles: domains are offered free to projects deemed high-impact by the domain holder; domains are initially pointed to the requester's server, with ownership potentially transferred if the project succeeds; new domains can be submitted by community members; and person-specific domains require the named individual's consent. The Centre for Effective Altruism (CEA) contributed 215 of their parked domains to the database, further expanding its scope. The project is hosted under the Alignment Ecosystem Development umbrella, an AI safety field-building nonprofit focused on digital infrastructure for the AI safety community. AED's broader portfolio includes aisafety.world, aisafety.training, aisafety.community, and grantmaking.ai. Contact for domain requests is domains@alignment.dev.
