We're funding AI x-risk work. Apply for a $1k–$50k grant from our $1M launch round.

For researchers, practitioners, and small teams doing concrete work to reduce existential risk from AI, including technical safety, governance, field-building, and evaluations.

Apply nowHow it works

What we fund

Concrete work on AI existential risk.

We are open to a wide range of approaches. The bar is whether your work plausibly reduces existential risk from advanced AI, not which specific lane it lives in.

Technical AI safety research

Alignment, interpretability, control, evaluations, and other empirical or theoretical work to make advanced AI systems safer.

AI policy and governance

Research, advocacy, and institution-building that helps governments and labs make better decisions about frontier AI.

Field-building and education

Programs, fellowships, communities, and content that bring talented people into AI safety work.

Evaluations and infrastructure

Benchmarks, datasets, tools, and shared infrastructure that the rest of the safety ecosystem can build on.

The details

Fast, focused, and right-sized.

Grant size

$1k–$50k

Most grants will be smaller, practical bets. Larger requests are still welcome when the scope justifies it.

Total round

$1M total

We expect to fund many projects in this launch round, with room to extend follow-on funding for the strongest grantees.

Timeline

Weeks, not months

We aim for first decisions within four weeks of submission. Reviewers may follow up with questions before deciding.

Process

Three steps from idea to decision.

Step 1

Create your profile

Tell us who you are, what you have worked on, and how to reach you. Start your profile.

Step 2

Submit your application

A few hundred words on your project, a budget breakdown, and the outcomes you are aiming for. No fifty-page proposals.

Step 3

Hear back from reviewers

Initial decisions land within weeks. Reviewers may follow up with questions before making a final call.

Who reviews applications

Reviewed by experienced AI safety grantmakers.

Applications are reviewed by a panel of AI safety practitioners and grantmakers who have evaluated proposals across the existing funding landscape. We partner with Manifund for fiscal sponsorship, so funded projects can receive grants without setting up their own legal entity.

Common questions

Things people usually ask.

Who can apply?
Individuals, small teams, and organizations doing work on AI existential risk. You do not need an existing nonprofit; Manifund handles fiscal sponsorship.
What if my budget is over the listed range?
Apply anyway, and tell us about the larger budget. We can fund a slice of a larger project, or point you to funders better suited to the full amount.
Can individuals apply, or only orgs?
Both. We expect a meaningful share of grants in this round to go to individuals working on independent projects.
How long does review take?
We aim to give a first response within four weeks of submission. Some applications move faster; complex ones take longer.
What happens if I am not selected?
Your profile stays in the database, visible to other funders who may be a better fit. You are also welcome to apply again in future rounds.
