Updated 04/02/26The London Initiative for Safe AI (LISA), operating as Safe AI London Ltd, is a registered UK charity (charity number 1211693) founded in 2023 and based at 25 Holywell Row, London EC2A 4XE in the Shoreditch area. Its mission is to build the ecosystem needed to safely navigate transformative AI by improving the capacity, capability, and cooperation of the AI safety field. LISA operates through three core pillars. First, it mobilizes talent by running programs and fellowships that help skilled professionals find their way into high-impact AI safety work. Second, it strengthens organizations by providing workspace, strategic advisory services, and operational support to AI safety groups. Third, it convenes the ecosystem by organizing events and convenings that bring together researchers, policymakers, companies, and funders. LISA opened its doors in September 2023 and has grown into a premier London research hub. It houses resident organizations including Apollo Research, BlueDot Impact, the Institute for AI Policy and Strategy (IAPS), and the Tarbell Center. It also hosts several AI safety training programs: ARENA (its own bootcamp for technical AI safety skills), LASR Labs (London AI Safety Research), Pivotal Research, and the PIBBSS/Iliad Residency. Researchers affiliated with over 50 organizations and universities are connected to LISA. The founding team includes James Fox (Research Director, completing a PhD in technical AI safety from Oxford) and Mike Brozowski (Operations Director), alongside Joe Murray, Nina Wolff-Ingham, Ryan Kidd, and Christian Smith. Ryan Kidd also serves as a trustee on the charity board. As of early 2026, LinkedIn lists approximately 13 employees. LISA has received multiple grants from Open Philanthropy, including support for its London coworking space (£640,000) and two rounds of general support (£563,600 and £1,268,000 in 2025). It also accepts donations through a Manifund fundraising page.
Theory of Change
Updated 04/02/26LISA's theory of change focuses on addressing a bottleneck in the AI safety researcher pipeline: the gap between trained individuals and productive, well-resourced researchers and organizations. By providing physical infrastructure (a collaborative co-working hub), financial stability, operational support, and community, LISA aims to increase the number and effectiveness of AI safety researchers and organizations operating in London and globally. Hosting multiple organizations under one roof is intended to create positive epistemic spillovers and cross-disciplinary collaboration. Supporting upskilling programs like ARENA accelerates talent entry into the field. Convening events help coordinate the broader ecosystem of funders, policymakers, and researchers, improving field-wide cooperation on navigating transformative AI safely.
