Theory of Change
The Center for Applied Utilitarianism operates on the theory that rigorous, independent research and analysis on AI strategy, policy, and governance can inform decision-makers and reduce catastrophic risks from advanced AI systems. By producing research on topics such as AI market concentration, international governance frameworks, and the interaction between AI development and existing catastrophic risks, the organization aims to shape policy discussions and improve the quality of decisions about AI development and deployment. The utilitarian framing suggests an approach focused on maximizing expected welfare outcomes through evidence-based analysis of global priorities.
