Org Details
Updated 05/18/26Effective Altruism Sweden (Effektiv Altruism Sverige) is a Swedish nonprofit association founded in 2016 with the mission of helping people in Sweden do as much good as possible. The organization has had paid staff since 2018 and is headquartered in central Stockholm at Sveavägen 76. It functions as an umbrella organization for the Swedish effective altruism community and connects individuals across career stages who want to have a greater positive impact through their work, donations, volunteering, or projects. EA Sweden's core activities fall into three pillars: building a thriving and inclusive community, supporting individual career development, and incubating promising high-impact projects. The career coaching program offers free, personalized support in both Swedish and English to help individuals identify and pursue high-impact career paths. The organization regularly delivers intro fellowships, reading groups, and specialized courses at major Swedish universities including Stockholm University, Stockholm School of Economics, and the Royal Institute of Technology. The organization hosts an annual flagship conference — the EA Sweden Impact Summit — which draws over 100 participants from across Sweden and the Nordic region. EA Sweden also hosted EAGxNordics in 2019 and 2023, a regional conference affiliated with the global EA Globals series. Two significant initiatives were incubated by EA Sweden before becoming standalone organizations: geeffektivt.se, an effective giving platform that has directed nearly 20 million SEK to top-rated charities since November 2020; and Impact Academy, a nonprofit focused on developing high-impact leaders, thinkers, and practitioners. As of 2024, EA Sweden had a team of four people (3.25 full-time equivalents), a total annual budget of approximately $355,000, and a community of over 640 registered members. The organization is primarily funded through grants from the EA Infrastructure Fund (EAIF) and similar EA movement-building funders. EA Sweden's work spans the full breadth of EA cause areas, with AI safety, global health and development, and animal welfare all represented in its programs and community.
Theory of Change
Updated 05/18/26EA Sweden aims to increase the number and quality of people in Sweden taking highly effective actions on global problems, including AI safety and existential risk. The causal chain runs from community-building activities — fellowships, career coaching, conferences, and university outreach — to participants gaining EA knowledge and skills, to those participants choosing high-impact careers in AI safety research, policy, or related fields, donating more effectively, or launching impactful projects. By serving as Sweden's hub for effective altruism, EA Sweden concentrates and multiplies the impact of talented, motivated people who might otherwise have no exposure to these ideas. The incubation of geeffektivt.se and Impact Academy demonstrates a second pathway: EA Sweden acts as a launchpad for new high-leverage initiatives that grow into independent organizations with larger footprints.
