Org Details
Updated 05/18/26AI Safety Hungary was founded by Gergő Gáspár in late 2022 with a small pilot program and officially launched in February 2023 under the name Budapest AI Safety. In early 2024 the organization rebranded to AI Safety Hungary to reflect its ambition to serve talent across all of Hungary, not just Budapest. The organization operates from the premise that advanced AI systems will likely emerge within our lifetimes and that deliberate safety work is needed to align them with human values. The core programming consists of structured reading and discussion courses adapted from internationally developed curricula. The intro-level AGI Safety Fundamentals course runs in technical and policy tracks over several weeks. An advanced Alignment 201 course provides deeper technical training. An Alignment Research Fellowship supports those who want to contribute to research directly. The organization also provides one-on-one career coaching, runs local events and socials in Budapest, and maintains a newsletter that grew from roughly 140 to over 530 subscribers between late 2023 and late 2024. As of fall 2024, the team comprises four staff members including Director Milán Alexy, Founder and Strategic Advisor Gergő Gáspár, Policy Lead Kambar Orazbekov, and Course Facilitator Athraa Alezzi, alongside operations support from Lili Csabai. The team works part-time collectively amounting to roughly 1.1 to 2 FTE. Across all course rounds from 2023 through 2024, 113 participants completed at least four sessions. AI Safety Hungary receives salary support from EA Funds (EAIF) and operational funding from Open Philanthropy. The organization collaborates with the European Network for AI Safety (ENAIS) and AI Safety Collab on curriculum and field-building initiatives, and it helped facilitate the founding of AI Safety Dublin through this European network. In 2025 the organization planned to expand monthly community meetups and further develop its role in the international AI safety community-building infrastructure.
Theory of Change
Updated 05/18/26AI Safety Hungary believes the most effective way to reduce risks from advanced AI is to grow the pipeline of talented researchers and policymakers working on AI safety. By running structured educational programs and providing career coaching to Hungarian students and professionals, the organization aims to help a small number of highly capable individuals transition into full-time AI safety roles at leading organizations. Building a regional talent pipeline and community also strengthens the broader international AI safety ecosystem, particularly in Central and Eastern Europe.
