Updated 04/02/26Evitable is a public-facing AI risk nonprofit founded in November 2025 by David Krueger, an Assistant Professor in Robust, Reasoning, and Responsible AI at the University of Montreal and a Core Academic Member at Mila (the Quebec AI Institute). Krueger previously served as research director on the founding team of the UK AI Security Institute in 2023 and was instrumental in initiating the CAIS Statement on AI Risk. He founded Evitable while on faculty leave in 2026 and based in the San Francisco Bay Area. The organization's central message is that the development of advanced AI — including the race toward superintelligence — is not an inevitable technological trajectory, but a political and economic choice that can be halted through government action. Evitable contends that AI companies are pursuing goals that threaten mass job displacement and existential harm, and that most people are unaware of either the severity of the risks or their power to demand change. Evitable pursues its mission through public communications campaigns, media appearances, and coalition-building with people who may not identify as activists. The organization has been featured in Good Morning Britain, USA Today, the Associated Press, New Scientist, and Politico. It is actively building out its founding team, with open roles including Chief of Staff, Head of Operations, and Head of Communications. Evitable operates as a charitable project fiscally sponsored by Anti Entropy, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit (EIN: 88-0967420). Donations are accepted through Every.org. The team at launch consists of David Krueger (Founder/CEO), Gretchen Krueger (researcher, volunteer capacity), and Sam A (assistant).
Theory of Change
Updated 04/02/26Evitable's theory of change holds that the development of superintelligent AI relies on concentrated private investment and active government support, and that this support is vulnerable to political pressure. By educating the public about the severity and imminence of societal-scale AI risks — and demonstrating that most people already oppose unchecked superintelligence development — Evitable aims to convert latent public concern into organized political action. That political pressure would then be directed at policymakers to reduce advanced AI chip production, withdraw government support for frontier AI labs, and impose other infrastructure-level constraints. The causal chain is: informed public awareness + demonstrated political agency → government policy intervention → reduced resources available for dangerous AI development → slower or halted race to superintelligence.
