Updated 05/18/26AXRP (AI X-risk Research Podcast) is a podcast created and hosted by Daniel Filan, launched in December 2020. The show focuses on in-depth interviews with AI safety researchers, with each episode centered on a specific paper or body of work. Filan discusses the ideas in the paper, the researchers' motivations, and how the work might contribute to reducing the risk of AI causing an existential catastrophe. Daniel Filan completed his PhD in AI at UC Berkeley in 2024, supervised by Stuart Russell, with a thesis on structure and representation in neural networks. He previously held an honours degree from Australian National University under Marcus Hutter. As of late 2025 to early 2026, he works as a member of technical staff at METR, focused on assessing risks from frontier AI. The podcast team includes Filan as host, Kate Brunotts as editor (since October 2024), Amber Dawn Ace providing transcription support (since August 2022), and Finan Adamson as audio consultant. Previous editor Jack Garrett served from March 2022 to October 2024 and also composed the show's opening and closing music. AXRP has received grant funding from the Long-Term Future Fund: $5,280 in May 2021 for audio editing, transcription, and recording costs, and $23,544 in 2022 (awarded under the April 2023 grant round announcement) to produce 12 additional episodes. The podcast also accepts listener support through Patreon and Ko-fi. As of early 2026, it has 17 Patreon members generating approximately $103 per month. The podcast is available on all major podcast platforms including Spotify, Apple Podcasts, and YouTube, and publishes full transcripts at axrp.net. Filan also hosts a sister podcast called The Filan Cabinet covering a broader range of topics.
Theory of Change
Updated 05/18/26AXRP aims to make AI safety research more accessible and understandable by providing in-depth conversational interviews with researchers about their work. The podcast's theory of change is that informal conversations expose the motivations, intuitions, and confidence levels behind published research in ways that papers alone cannot, helping researchers, funders, and the broader community better understand and engage with AI safety ideas. By building awareness and comprehension of x-risk research, AXRP helps grow and inform the community of people working on or funding AI safety.
