Org Details
Updated 05/18/26AI-Plans (ai-plans.com / aiplans.org) is a small AI alignment research and events platform founded in early 2023 by Kabir Kumar, based in Chelmsford, UK. The project began as a contributable compendium of AI alignment plans and the criticisms made against them, intended to help newcomers understand what alignment work is being done, who is doing it, and the assumptions, strengths, and weaknesses of each approach. The platform launched in an alpha version and quickly attracted alignment researchers, with over 100 plans and 150 critiques catalogued by early 2024. In addition to the compendium, AI-Plans has run several community events: Critique-a-Thons (where participants earn prizes for submitting well-reasoned critiques of alignment plans), a Law-a-Thon, an AI Alignment Evals Hackathon, and the Moonshot Alignment Program — a five-week high-intensity research sprint for participants working across tracks including Agent Foundations Theory, Applied Agent Foundations, Neuroscience-based AI Alignment, and Improved Preference Optimization. The team is small and largely volunteer-driven, with roughly 2-10 contributors. Known team members include Kabir Kumar (Director/Lead), Nathan (Quality Director and Project Manager), Jonathan Ng (independent alignment researcher), and several developers. The organization is privately held and does not appear to be a registered nonprofit. Funding to date has been very modest — early support included a private donation of approximately £4,000 (~$5,000) and small Manifund prize funds. The organization positions itself as 'leading research and events in AI alignment and safety' and is actively recruiting volunteers and seeking community engagement.
Theory of Change
Updated 05/18/26AI-Plans believes that progress on AI alignment is hampered by fragmentation and inaccessibility of existing work. By creating a centralized, contributable compendium where alignment plans can be catalogued, critiqued, and ranked, the platform aims to surface the strongest ideas and expose weaknesses in existing approaches through structured public peer review. Running hands-on research events like hackathons and intensive programs accelerates direct technical work and talent development in the alignment field. Together, these activities are intended to make the alignment research landscape more legible and to accelerate collective progress toward solving alignment before transformative AI is deployed.
