Org Details
Updated 05/18/26Trajectory Labs is a nonprofit organization based in downtown Toronto, Canada, whose mission is to catalyze Toronto's role in steering AI progress toward a future of human flourishing. Founded by Mario Gibney and operational since January 1, 2025, the organization serves as a physical hub for the growing Toronto AI safety community. The organization operates three core programs. Its Workspace program provides a fully furnished coworking office with 24/7 access for approximately 30 AI safety practitioners, along with amenities including weekday breakfasts and twice-weekly community lunches. Membership is free for approved members working on reducing catastrophic AI risk. The Events program hosts multiple gatherings each week, ranging from casual meetups and expert presentations to weekend hackathons, designed both as entry pathways for newcomers to AI safety and as ongoing educational resources for established researchers. The Peer Network program cultivates mentorship and collaboration opportunities to strengthen members' individual work and Toronto's collective capacity in addressing AI challenges. Trajectory Labs is funded by Open Philanthropy, which made a grant for AI safety coworking space operations in November 2025. The organization's resident community includes full-time independent AI safety practitioners, university students, career-transitioning professionals, and volunteer contributors. Aether, an independent LLM agent safety research group led by Rohan Subramani, Rauno Arike, and Shubhorup Biswas, operates out of the Trajectory Labs workspace. The staff consists of Executive Director Mario Gibney, who has a background in AI governance and safety advocacy, and an Operations Generalist. The board includes Kathrin Gardhouse and Giles Edkins.
Theory of Change
Updated 05/18/26Trajectory Labs believes that physical proximity and community infrastructure are critical multipliers for AI safety research productivity. By concentrating AI safety talent in a shared, well-resourced space in Toronto, the organization aims to increase the quantity and quality of safety-relevant work through faster knowledge transfer, peer accountability, and collaborative problem-solving. The events program serves as a talent pipeline, helping promising individuals transition into AI safety careers. By building a critical mass of researchers in Toronto — a city with significant untapped potential given its proximity to major AI labs and strong university ecosystem — Trajectory Labs seeks to expand the global AI safety community and increase the probability of beneficial AI outcomes.
