Lennart Stern
Bio
Lennart Stern is a postdoctoral researcher at the FutureLab CERES at the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK), working within the Climate Economics and Policy department at MCC Berlin. He earned his PhD from the Paris School of Economics in May 2022, with a dissertation titled "Essays in Environmental Economics" supervised by David Martimort. His research focuses on designing mechanisms to improve the provision of global public goods, with a particular emphasis on reward funds that incentivize governments to adopt policies with positive global externalities (such as reducing fossil fuel emissions or funding disease surveillance), and tax clubs that generate revenue for these reward mechanisms. He has applied mechanism design theory, optimal taxation theory, and game theory to questions around international climate policy, jurisdictional reward funds, and aviation and maritime tax clubs. He received funding from the Long-Term Future Fund to support a 24-month postdoc in economics to research mechanisms for improving global public good provision.
