Kristaps Zilgalvis
Bio
Kristaps Zilgalvis is a Latvian biosecurity-focused student at UC San Diego, where he is pursuing a degree in Biological Sciences. He received a $250,000 grant from the Long-Term Future Fund (December 2021 round) to cover four years of tuition, housing, and dining at UCSD, with the stated goal of reducing biological existential risk. Prior to the grant, he was based in Belgium and had worked with a long-term-future-focused biosecurity researcher who provided a positive reference. During his undergraduate studies, he served as a research intern at the Salk Institute in La Jolla, where he was introduced to research on the neurobiological correlates of consciousness. He has since developed a broader intellectual interest in consciousness science, AI consciousness, and effective altruism-adjacent topics, writing on these subjects on Substack and LessWrong. He is also co-founder and COO of Current, a news platform, and has an affiliation with Nina Capital.
