Jacob Mendel
Bio
Jake (Jacob) Mendel is a Senior Program Associate for Technical AI Safety at Coefficient Giving (the rebranded Open Philanthropy technical AI safety grantmaking team), a role he took on in November 2024. He holds a BSc in Physics and an MSc in Mathematics from the University of Cambridge. Prior to joining Coefficient Giving, he worked as an Interpretability Research Scientist at Apollo Research and conducted independent research in AI safety and pandemic modelling. His pandemic modelling work included a collaboration with Will Bradshaw's team at the Nucleic Acid Observatory (NAO/SecureBio), an early-warning biosecurity project focused on detecting novel pathogens via metagenomic sequencing of wastewater. At Coefficient Giving, he focuses on identifying and funding promising technical AI safety research, including co-authoring a $40M Request for Proposals for technical AI safety research across 21 areas in February 2025. He is active on the Alignment Forum and has contributed to interpretability research, including geometric analysis work connected to sparse dictionary learning.
