Updated 05/18/26The NSF Institute for Trustworthy AI in Law & Society (TRAILS) is a partnership between the University of Maryland, George Washington University, Morgan State University, and Cornell University. Funded by a $20 million award from the National Science Foundation and the National Institute of Standards and Technology, TRAILS investigates what trust in AI looks like, develops technical AI solutions that build trust, and studies policy models and participatory governance strategies that keep AI systems accountable to affected communities.
