AI Safety Newsletter
About
The AI Safety Newsletter is a free publication produced by the Center for AI Safety (CAIS), a nonprofit organization based in San Francisco dedicated to reducing societal-scale risks from AI. The newsletter launched in April 2023 and has grown rapidly, reaching over 44,000 subscribers by 2024 after tripling its subscriber base during that year. The newsletter is designed to be accessible to a general audience with no technical background required. It covers three main content areas: major news stories in AI policy and the industry, in-depth perspectives from experts, and summaries of technical research with a focus on AI safety and security. In addition to the written newsletter on Substack at newsletter.safe.ai, the content is also available as a podcast on Spotify and Apple Podcasts. The newsletter is edited and written by a small team including Dan Hendrycks (CAIS Director), Corin Katzke (lead writer), Nick Stockton (editor and writer), Alice Blair, and Laura Hiscott. The AI Safety Newsletter is part of a broader suite of publications from CAIS, alongside AI Frontiers (specialist perspectives) and the ML Safety Newsletter (technical machine learning papers). All publications are free and supported by tax-deductible donations to CAIS.
Theory of Change
By making AI safety news and research accessible to a broad audience without requiring a technical background, the newsletter builds public awareness and understanding of AI risks. Wider understanding among policymakers, industry professionals, and the general public creates pressure for stronger safety standards, better regulation, and more support for the AI safety research field. The newsletter serves as a field-building and advocacy tool for CAIS's broader mission to reduce societal-scale risks from AI.
