Program on Understanding Law, Science & Evidence (PULSE)
About
Updated 05/18/26The Program on Understanding Law, Science & Evidence (PULSE) at UCLA School of Law is an interdisciplinary center that examines how basic facts about the world, generated by science and used as evidence, shape law and public policy. PULSE explores the complex connections between law, science, technology and evidence and engages in cutting-edge research and programming, including student-focused colloquia, conferences, lectures and workshops on topics such as forensic science, implicit bias and disputes over climate change. In recent years, PULSE has also expanded into artificial intelligence governance, including work supported by major philanthropy and the AI PULSE project, which promotes accessible scholarship on AI law and policy.
Theory of Change
PULSE’s strategy for impact is to generate interdisciplinary research and public programming that clarifies how scientific evidence and technological change should inform legal and policy decisions, and to disseminate this work to students, scholars and policymakers. By rigorously analyzing how advances in science and technology affect law and policy, and how their impacts can be managed to advance human and societal well-being, the program aims to shape better governance frameworks for emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence.
