CJF Hinton Award for Excellence in AI Safety Reporting
About
Updated 05/18/26Launched in October 2025, the CJF Hinton Award for Excellence in AI Safety Reporting is an annual journalism award established by the Canadian Journalism Foundation in partnership with The AI Safety Foundation. Named after Nobel laureate Geoffrey Hinton, the award recognizes exceptional reporting that investigates how AI technologies may create safety risks, including catastrophic and systemic harms, and that examines safeguards, policies and technical measures to mitigate those risks. With a $10,000 prize, the program aims to incentivize nuanced, evidence-based coverage of AI safety that informs the public and policymakers. The inaugural shortlist was announced in April 2026.
Theory of Change
The CJF Hinton Award seeks to improve public understanding and governance of AI by rewarding journalism that rigorously investigates AI safety challenges and potential catastrophic risks while highlighting credible solutions. By raising the profile of this work and providing a significant prize, the award is intended to encourage more media organizations and reporters to cover AI safety in depth, thereby informing citizens and influencing policy debates.
