UCLA Institute for Technology, Law & Policy (ITLP)
About
Updated 05/18/26The UCLA Institute for Technology, Law & Policy (ITLP) is a collaboration between UCLA School of Law and the UCLA Samueli School of Engineering, established in 2020 to address the legal and policy implications of rapidly evolving technologies. The institute conducts cross-disciplinary research and public programming on issues such as artificial intelligence and algorithms, machine learning, robotics, cybersecurity, digital media and communications, examining both the benefits and risks these technologies pose for privacy, justice and democratic institutions. ITLP convenes scholars, technologists, policymakers and students, produces accessible resources like its Demystifying AI series, and seeks to ensure that new technologies are developed, implemented and regulated in ways that are socially beneficial, equitable and accountable.
Theory of Change
ITLP aims to improve the governance of emerging technologies by bringing together legal scholars, engineers, technologists and policymakers to study how systems such as artificial intelligence, algorithms and digital platforms affect society, privacy and justice, and by translating that research into public-facing resources, events and policy engagement. By grounding technology policy debates in rigorous, cross-disciplinary analysis and making its findings accessible through reports, events and educational materials, the institute seeks to shape legal and regulatory frameworks so that new technologies are more equitable, accountable and socially beneficial.
