Theory of change, i.e. 'How does this work reduce existential risk from advanced AI?'
AISafety.com is a field-building project that aims to multiply global AI safety efforts through a centralized hub that actively congregates and surfaces 'everything' useful AI safety. There are pages dedicated to events, training programs, self-study, mentors, and more (check out the site! And even use it), which surface opportunities that, as many users have told us, they would not have found otherwise. We're connected with a growing user-base of AI safety-interested individuals who have find value in the product, and we want to keep going. We would like funding to continue to build out user-focused, data-driven features that make the site more usable, and help people of a diversity of backgrounds find the absolute most useful path through these resources. This is exemplified by our chatbot, v1 of which was just released (but we want to do so much more!), and our Events and Training Programs page redesigns (to be launched very soon). Our sites are set big and we also want to see if we may be able to reach individuals further from the mainstream AI safety community, and build an interface and feature-set which pave the path for a wider range of people to contribute in the most impactful way possible given their situation.
Budget
We have been funded for almost two total years, and generally active for about three years. Our annual budget is:- Bryce Robertson’s stipends (1 FTE): $70,000 USD
- Melissa Samworth’s stipends (0.5 FTE): $35,000 USD
- Miscellaneous costs (e.g. software subscriptions): $3,000 USD
- Contractor pool for emerging projects: $15,000 USD
- Contingency buffer – 10%: $12,300 USD
- Fiscal sponsorship fee (Beacon) – 10% of grant: $15,033 USD
Total: 150,333 USD
Note that our team is composed of many volunteers, but as we say on our about page, 'We consider AISafety.com a community project, led by a few core members.'
So whatever we funds we receive extend our efforts by that many more months (about $12,500 USD per month)! This will be especially useful if other funding ends up not coming through, or being delayed.
